Govt. harassing defence lawyers to deprive Nizami, Mujahid of legal assistance: Khandaker Mahabub

25 October 2015,Sunday, 18:20

Supreme Court Bar Association president advocate Khandaker Mahabub Hossain on Sunday alleged the government is creating obstacles in various ways so that lawyers of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami and secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid cannot provide them with legal assistance.

Mahabub Hossain, who is principal counsel of Maulana Nizami and Mujahid, made this allegation at a press conference which was convened at Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium in protest against harassment of two lawyers--advocate Shishir Monir and advocate Asad Uddin, members of defence counsels’ panel.

Referring to recent incidents of conducting raid on the residence of advocate Shishir Monir and picking up of Asad Uddin by members of law enforcing agencies, he said the government is doing this to instill fear in the minds of defence counsels.

“Rather the government can tell us clearly that they don’t want us to give legal assistance to our clients, then we will stop providing that,” he said, adding that there is no scope to harass lawyers personally using law enforcing agencies.
