Tigers take 129-run 1st innings lead

Shakib fires century of 116 runs

Bangladesh resurged on the 3rd day to take a 129-run lead against Sri Lanka in the 1st innings on Friday after suffering a quick collapse in the 2nd day’s last session of the 2nd and last Test of the Joy Bangla Cup series at P Sara Oval in Colombo, reports UNB.

Bangladesh resumed the 1st innings on the day with overnight score of 214/5 in 60 overs and raised their tally to 467/10 in 134.1 overs that witnessed the Tigers record breaking 7th wicket partnership of 131 in 32.1 overs against Sri Lanka in P Sara, between all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan debut Mosaddek Hossain.

Shakib scored 116 off 159 balls, including 10 boundaries, for his 5th Test century and was caught by Dinesh Chandimal off Lakshan Sandakan bowling to depart from the worthwhile 7th pair, setting the team figure at 421/7 in 113.2 overs.

Mosaddek played a classy innings of 75 off 155 balls, including seven boundaries and two over boundaries, on his Test debut before being stumped by keeper Niroshan Dickwella off skipper Rangana Herath’s bowling on the team’s final collection.

Experienced Shakib, earlier, played another partnership innings of 92 in 23.3 overs with skipper Mushfiqur Rahim in the 6th pair that ended on the 3rd day at 290/6 in 81.1 overs, starting from 198/5 in 57.4 overs on the 2nd day.

Mushfiq was bowled out before lunch by Suranga Lakmal after hammering a half century of 52 off 81 balls, including six boundaries, to depart from overnight 6th pair.

Mehedi Hasan Miraz gave Mosaddek a good company for 50 balls and managed 24 runs firing two boundaries, before trapped lbw by Rangana Herath at 454/8 in 128.1 overs.

Lankan spinner-cum-skipper Rangana Herath and left-hand wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan captured four wickets each for 82 and 104 runs respectively while Suranga Lakmal took one for 90 runs.

Trailing by 129 runs, Sri Lank (338 runs in the 1st innings) opened the 2nd innings and collected 54/0 in 13.0 overs at stumps, reducing the trail-margin to 75 runs.

Dimuth Karunaratne and Upul Tharanga were unbeaten scoring 25 runs each in the opening pair when the bails were drawn for the day.
