AFC Cup: Bengal derby ends in 1-1 draw

In a football battle of two Bengals, Dhaka Premier League champions Abahani Limited played out a 1-1 draw against Kolkata Mohun Bagan FC in their last Group E engagement of the AFC Cup Football at the floodlit Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Emeka Onuoha put Dhaka Abahani Limited ahead in the very 9th minute of the match with a brilliant placing shot from two opponent defenders (1-0) while Katsumi Yusa restored the parity for Kolkata Mohun Bagan FC in the 82nd minute from a penalty (1-1).

Despite the day’s draw, Dhaka Abahani Limited finished bottom in the four-team Group E securing four points from six matches while Mohun Bagan FC was placed 3rd collecting seven points from all the six group engagements. However, both the teams have already eliminated from four-team group.

Dhaka Abahani Limited suffered 1-3 goals defeat against Mohun Bagan FC at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium in Kolkata last month despite leading by 1-0 goal.

Earlier, Dhaka Abahani Limited tasted the first victory in the group beating another Indian side JSW Bengaluru by 2-0 goals on home soil this month.

In the group matches, Abahani lost to Maziya SR 0-2 in home match, conceded 1-3 defeat against Mohun Bagan FC in away match, lost to JSW Bengaluru 0-2 in away match, beat JSW Bengaluru 2-0 in home match and lost to Maziya SR 0-2 in away match.
