11 August 2017,Friday, 23:23

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali has said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi have taken Dhaka-Delhi bilateral relations to a new level beyond a “strategic partnership.”

He made the remarks while delivering his speech in a talk on “India-Bangladesh Relations-Moving Ahead” at the National Defence College in New Delhi on Friday, UNB reports.

Referring to Sheikh Hasina’s tour to India in April this year the envoy said 11 agreements and 24 MoUs were signed during the highly successful visit.

The visit encompassed “every important sector in our bilateral cooperation namely security, trade, connectivity, energy, civil nuclear agreement, defence and introduction of new bus and train services,” he said.

Describing Bangladesh’s ties with India as special Syed Muazzem Ali said Bangladesh will utilize the new $5 billion Indian credit, including $500 million in defence sector for the projects that Dhaka needs on priority basis.

“Our private sectors also made their valuable inputs when they signed MoUs for the investment to the tune of $13 billion primarily in the energy sector,” he said.

He said a prominent road in New Delhi has been named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation.

The High Commissioner said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has consistently tried to restore mutual trust and cooperation and she has “brought a change in our mindset in our bilateral ties.”

The envoy said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed his keen desire to promote our bilateral cooperation. His historic visit to Bangladesh in June 2015 has taken our ties to newer heights.

He said 68 years after the partition of 1947, and 41 years after the conclusion of the Indira-Mujib Border Accord of 1974, the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) between the two countries was concluded and ratified.

Syed Muazzem Ali mentioned that Bangladesh and India have been making commendable progress in security cooperation as well in energy, trade and commerce, connectivity and people-to-people contact.
