Khulna beat Rajshahi by 68 runs after scoring this BPL’s highest score

Khulna Titans regained the top slot in the points table of the seven-team 5th Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) beating Rajshahi Kings by 68 runs in the 30th match of the league at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium in Chittagong on Monday, UNB reports.

Khulna Titans lost the top slot just hour before this win as Dhaka Dynamites routed Chittagong Vikings by 7 wickets in the day’s first match at the same venue.

Riding on the Shafiul Islam’s five-wicket haul for 26 runs, Khulna Titans restricted Rajshahi Kings to 145 for all in 19 overs after posting this edition BPL’s highest score of 213 runs spurred by Afif Hossain and man of the match Nicholas Pooran’s half centuries.

The previous highest total in this edition BPL was 211/5 which was scored by Chittagong Vikings with Sikandar Raza’s 95 -- the highest individual score in this edition -- against Sylhet Sixers at the same venue on November 24.

Rony Talukdar top-scored 36 off 23 balls, including five boundaries and one six, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz (29 off 23 b; 1x4; 2x6), Zakir Hasan (19), Mohammad Sami (18), James Franklin (14), opener Mominul Haque (11) and Mushfiqur Rahim (11) were the other double digit scorers for the losers.

Shafiul grabbed his five wickets in four overs while Abu Jayed bagged two wickets for 48 runs. Afif Hossain, skipper Mahmudullah Riyad and Jofra Archer took one wicket each for 7, 9 and 15 runs respectively.

Sent in to bat first, Khulna played out stipulated 20 overs for their collection losing 5 wickets where Afif Hossain and Nicholas Pooran shared a stormy innings of 88 off 7.1 overs in the 4th wicket stand.

Afif played till the end for his unbeaten half century of 54* off 38 balls, including six sixes, while N Pooran hit another half century of 57 off 26 balls, including six boundaries and three over boundaries.

Afif and N Pooran started their 4th pair composure from 75/3 in 8.5 overs after the dismissal of skipper Mahmudullah Riyad and continued until Pooran was caught by skipper Darren Sammy off James Franklin on 163/4 in 16th over.

Afif shared two other partnerships in the innings -- 57 off 4 overs with Carlos Brathwaite in the 5th wicket stand and 45 off 4.3 overs with opener Nazmul Hossain Shanto in the 2nd stand which started from 28/1 in 3.4 overs after the dismissal of Rilee Rossouw.

Shanto fell short by a single run for another half century as he was trapped lbw by James Franklin after scoring 49 off 31 balls, including five boundaries and two sixes, at 73/2 in 8.1 overs.

Carlos Brathwaite was bowled out by Mohammad Sami, adding 34 off 14 balls, including three boundaries and three sixes, at 210/5 in 19.2 overs.

James Franklin captured three wickets for 50 runs while Mohammad Sami took one for 22 runs for Rajshah Kings.

With this win, Khulna Titans collected 13 points from nine outings, having six wins, two losses and one no result, followed by defending champions Dhaka Dynamites with 11 points also from nine matches securing five wins, three losses and one no result.

Rajshahi Kings remained in the penultimate slot with their previous collection of six points from nine games, having three wins and six losses.
