Power outage causes panic among launch passengers on Meghna

Two hundred passengers faced ordeals and narrowly escaped an accident following a power outage as the launch’s generator went out of order in the middle of Meghna River on Tuesday.

MV Shonartori 5, a Chandpur-bound 3-storied launch with more than 200 passengers left Sadarghat terminal at 7:45pm.

When it was crossing Shatnol area of Matlab Uttar upazila, its generator suddenly went out of order and the whole launch went into complete darkness spreading panic among the passengers.

It also narrowly escaped a head-on collision with a sand-laden trawler (bulkhead) near Ekhlaspur area around 10:30 pm. As a result a stampede occurred there and some of the passengers sustained injuries when they fell on each other.

Just after 20 minutes of the incident, the launch also ran aground at a hidden shoal in the middle of the river near Raj Rajeswar area tilting it one side.

Women and children became panicked at that time, said several passengers adding that some of them were injured. Many passengers started wearing life jackets, they added.

Being informed, Chandpur district Commissioner Majedur Rahman Khan along with additional district magistrate Ayesha Akhter and NDC Narayan Chandra Pal rushed to the spot and quelled the passengers after boarding on it.

The team detained the launch master Daud Hossain and staff Rafiqul Islam for negligence of their duties and services.

Later, the launch reached Chandpur Launch Ghat at 11:45 pm.

Meanwhile, Inspector Mohammad Suman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority filed a case with Marine Court on Wednesday accusing the launch owner, its driver and a staff.
