17 May 2018,Thursday, 22:54

Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, an organisation of lawyers politically aligned with the BNP, on Thursday demanded for re-election of Bangladesh Bar Council which was held on May 14, due to alleged irregularities and corruption in the polls.

In a press briefing, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Forum’s secretary general and joint secretary general of BNP, Mahbub Uddin Khokon, came up with the demand.

Mahbub Uddin alleged “The number of SCBA members is recently 9,092 while only 853 were shortlisted as voters. In addition with that many members could not cast their votes.”

“We sent a letter to Bar Council chairman and Attorney General about the faulty voter list on May 10 but he failed to take any step in this regard,” he added.

“We strongly condemn the irregularity and corruption in the Bar Council election,” he said.

Earlier, the elections to the Bangladesh Bar Council, consisting of 14 posts, were held on May 14 where Awami League led Ainjibi Somonnoy Parishad bagged 12 seats and BNP backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum bagged only two seats.

Senior lawyer Abdul Baset Majumder led the ruling party-backed AL lawyers group and AJ Mohammad Ali, former Attorney General (AG) led the BNP backed lawyers.

The Bar Council election was held last on August of 2015.
