Youth jumps off building trying to escape police torture in Brahmanbaria

A young man was severely injured as he allegedly jumped off the roof of Sadar Police Station in Brahmanbaria district in a bid to escape the police torture on Monday evening.

The injured was identified as Md Rasel Mia, 21, son of Alkas Mia of Shantibagh area in municipality of sadar upazila and security guard of Shahjalal Islami Bank in Brahmanbaria branch.

The injured was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.

Police arrested Rasel around 3 pm as Tk 2 lakh was stolen from a shop of city center.

Victim’s family members alleged that the police picked Rasel from his house and tortured him brutally and finally pushed him from the police station’s roof.

Additional police superintendent, Iqbal Hossain while denied the allegation and said they had detained a number of suspects including Rasel for interrogation on Monday.

In the evening, Rasel went to the roof after escaping the surveillance of constables and jumped off from it, he said.

Meanwhile, after the incident, locals brought out procession and formed human-chain protesting the police torture at Press Club premises and demanded legal steps against the involved cops in the afternoon.
