BNP candidate for Noakhali-1 constituency Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and his three supporters sustained bullet injuries and at least 50 others were injured in a clash with ruling Awami League men at Sonaimur Bypass area of Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali on Saturday afternoon.

Khokon and other injured have been admitted to Noakhali General Hospital.

The BNP candidate obtained permission from assistant returning officer and police administration to carry out mass contact at Sonaimuri.

In the afternoon, BNP activists started assembling at Sonaimuri College ground, where, BNP leaders alleged, Awami League activists swooped on them, triggering a clash.

Later, when Khokon was conducting mass contact at Sonaimuri Bazar, police barricaded them from two sides, charged baton on BNP activists and fired rubber pellets targeting them, leaving Khokon and over his 50 supporters injured.

Five rubber pellets pierced Khokon’s body.

Witnesses said Awami League supporters, who went on a rampage, ransacked all counters of the chair coaches at Sonaimur Bypass area, Sonaimuri municipality unit BNP president Motahar Hossain Manik owned Dhansiri hotel, medicine shop of BNP leader Dr. Jalal and business enterprise of another BNP leader Nurul Islam Nuru.

Contacted, officer-in-charge of Sonaimuri police station Abdul Majid said the situation is under control at the time of submitting this report.
