02 January 2019,Wednesday, 23:03

Detectives have arrested two people, including the prime accused, over the ‘gang-rape’ of a woman at Charbajuli village in Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali after Sunday’s election.

The arrestees are prime accused Sohel, 30, son of late Ismail, and Md Swapan, 35, son of late Abdul Mannan of Madhya Bagya village in Subarnachar.

Superintendent of Police of the district Md Ilias Sharif said a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Sohel from a brickfield in Maheshpur of Barura upazila in Cumilla on Wednesday noon and another team of Noakhali DB picked Swapan up from Sluicegate area in Ramgati upazila of Laxmipur on Tuesday night.

With this, three people have so far been arrested in connection with the ‘gang-rape’ of the woman.

Earlier, police arrested Badsha Alam from Charbajuli on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Dr Syed Mohiuddin Abdul Azim, medical officer of the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital, said a two-member medical team has been formed for conducting the test on the victim.

He also said they primarily found the evidence of rape.

The victim alleged she was violated for casting her ballot for 'Sheaf of Paddy'--electoral symbol of BNP-- ignoring instruction of Ruhul Amin, a local Awami League leader and former member of Char Jubilee Union Parishad.

She said Ruhul Amin repeatedly insisted her to vote for Boat--electoral symbol of Awami League. Amin became furious after seeing that the woman put the Sheaf of Paddy-stamped ballot paper into box, ignoring his instruction, according to the victim, the charge Ruhul Amin denied.

Contacted, superintendent of police in Noakhali, Elias Sharif, confirmed that the woman was violated but he said the incident is not related to election.

According to the victim’s husband, a group of hoodlums stormed their house in the early hours of Monday and tied up all the family members except his wife.

They took the woman outside the house at gunpoint where they violated her in turns, the victim’s husband claimed.

After the rape, they also threatened the victim not to disclose the matter to anyone, saying they would kill her if otherwise, he said.

With the help of neighbours, the victim was taken to hospital on Monday noon and a case was filed against nine people over the incident.
