Highest ever 466 extrajudicial killings occurred in 2018: ASK

Painting a grim human rights situation of the outgoing year 2018, Ain o Salish Kendra today said a total of 466 extrajudicial killings took place, which was the highest in country’s history.

Expressing concern over the human rights situation in the outgoing year, the independent rights group urged the government to form a ‘judicial probe commission’ to investigate into the incidents of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances.

Among the victims of extrajudicial killings, 292 were during anti-narcotics drive alone that began in May 4, it said.

“The extra-judicial killings in the name of anti-narcotics drive should be properly investigated to find out whether any innocent person was killed,” ASK's Executive Director Sheepa Hafiza said on rights situation of Bangladesh at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity.

“The overall human right situation last year in the country was alarming,” she said, adding that in 2017, the numbers of extrajudicial killings were 162.

Senior coordinator Abu Ahamad Faizul Kabir, who read out the report on Human Rights Situation in 2018, said that overall human rights situation in the outgoing year was alarming and extrajudicial killings continued throughout the year.

According to organisation’s rights situation analysis in 2018, 732 incidents of rape took place, 63 were murdered after rape and 7 committed suicide after being raped.

The report said a total of 1,011 children were victims of abuse, 283 were murdered while and 108 committed suicide after abuse.

Replying to a question about growing incidents of violence against women and children, Sheepa Hafiza said: "We are seeing recurrence of crimes against women and children due to absence of effective trial and punishment of the culprits."
