Houses torched over AL factional clash in Jhenaidah

A house was torched and several others were vandalised in a clash between two factions of ruling Awami League at Hatgopalpur bazar in Sadar upazila of Jhenaidah on Saturday night.

Locals said two groups locked in clash over establishing supremacy in the locality.

Confirming the incident, Kanak Kumar Das, additional superintendent of Jhenaidah police, Syed Nizamul Goni Litu, chairman of Padmakor Union Parishad and former chairman of the same Parishad Bikash Biswas had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy for long,

As a sequel to the enmity, the supporters of Bikash Biswas attacked the houses of Litu chairman’s supporters around 10 pm and vandalised five shops and ten houses in the area.

The attackers also looted valuables from the houses and set fire to the house of one Anar Ali, he said.

On information, a fire fighting unit went to the spot and doused the blaze after half an hour.

Locals said none was injured in the attack.

Additional police have been deployed to avert further trouble as a tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident, the police official said.
