Bilaichhari upazila AL president shot dead in Rangamati

Awami League Bilaichhari upazila unit president of Rangamati district was shot to death by some unidentified miscreants at Farua area of the upazila this morning.

The deceased was identified as Suresh Kanti Tongchanga.

The incident takes place less than 24 hours amid a tense situation over the death of seven people in a gun attack in the upazila on Monday evening.

Alamgir Kabir, superintendent of Rangamati Police said that the killing took place at Alikheyang around 8: 45 am when Suresh was returning home by a boat from the upazila headquarters along with his wife and children after the upazila election.

“A gang of miscreants obstructed his boat and opened fire on him, leaving him dead on the spot,” he said.

Suresh Kanti’s body has been taken to Bilaichhari and will be sent to Rangamati for a post-mortem, said Asif Iqbal, the Bilaichhari Upazila Nirbahee Officer.

Rangamati district Awami League General Secretary and member of the Rangamati Hill District Council, Haji Md Musa Matobbor, has blamed the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samiti led by Jyotirindro Bodhipriyo Larma, also known as Santu Larma, for Kanti’s murder.

A tense situation is prevailing there as Awami League activists are staging demonstrations in the area.

On Monday evening, seven people, including an assistant presiding officer, were killed and a presiding officer among 13 was injured in a gun attack on a vehicle of a motorcade carrying election officials and law enforcers after election in Baghaichhari upazila.
