2 detainees killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Two men were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Rajarchhara in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district early Friday.

The deceased, identified as Nur Mohammad, 40, son of Azahar Mia of Nazir Para, and Nurul Amin, 35, son of Abdus Shukkur of Jaliapara in the upazila, were drug traders and were arrested earlier, according to police.

Contacted, Dipak Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said both Nur Mohammad and Nurul Amin were wanted in a number of cases and arrested from the upazila on Wednesday.

Later, a team of police along with the criminals conducted a drive in Rajarchhara area around 3:30 am to arrest their accomplices.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the ‘criminals’ opened fire on police, forcing them to retaliate in self-defence’.

At one stage, both Nurul Amin and Nur Mohammad were caught in the line of fire and died on the spot.

Five policemen sustained injuries in the ‘gunfight’, the OC claimed, adding that eight guns, 20,000 Yaba pills and 10 cartridges were recovered from the spot.

Law enforcement’s claim could not be verified independently.
