The Institute of Health Technology (IHT) in Rajshahi was closed for an indefinite period following a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami League’s student front, over trading of human skeleton.

After an emergency meeting of the academic council on Tuesday, the authorities took the decision and issued a notice in the afternoon asking the students to vacate their dormitories by 8pm.

All classes and examinations of the university were suspended while the male and female dormitories were announced to shut for indefinite period to avoid further untoward incident, its Principal Farhana Haq said.

An altercation took place on the campus between three supporters of Wahiduzzaman, general secretary of IHT unit Chhatra League, and a first year student, Saiful Islam, a supporter of BCL president, over skeleton trading.

They went to BCL president to resolve the dispute and at one stage of altercation, both the groups attacked each other, leaving at least 11 leaders and activists of BCL injured.

Off the injured, the conditions of two have been stated critical, said Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station.

On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control, he added.

Later, two cases were filed in this connection.

Wahidussaman filed a case against eight students while Sharifa Bani, mother of injured Nafiul Islam, filed another with the police station.
