Rangamati launch owners go on indefinite strike

The launch owners in Rangamati district today have gone on an indefinite strike in response to their association’s call demanding a ban on plying of speedboats and staff-boats in the Kaptai Lake.

Rangamati Launch Owner Association President Moin Uddin Salim announced the strike programme issuing a letter on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the sudden strike is causing untold sufferings to hundreds of passengers as the agitated workers suspended plying of all passengers launches in the lake.

Particularly, those who travel on the occasion of Baishabi festival, a festival to welcome Biju, Boisu, Bishu, Bihu, Sangrai and Bangla New Year, schedule to begin on April 12, are facing severe difficulties due to the strike.

No boat left Rangamati terminal since morning.

Passengers were seen stranding at different terminals in Kaptai Lake till filling of this report around 2:40pm.

Waterways are the main means of transport for the people of six upazilas in the district.
