Kushtia BNP leader dies in prison, wife alleges negligence in treatment

Joint general secretary of BNP Kushtia district unit and founder president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal district unit SM Shamim Arju died at Kushtia General Hospital under custody today.

Her wife complained Arju died due to negligence of duty of the jail authorities as they did not take him to hospital timely.

Resident physician of the hospital Dr Taposh Kumar Sarkar said he died 10 minutes after he was taken to the emergency unit of the hospital from the jail.

Jail super of Kushtia Jail Zaker Hossain said Arju was sent to the hospital as he suddenly collapsed on the ground in the afternoon.

Local BNP sources said police arrested 10 BNP leaders and activists, including Arju, on March 26 while they were returning after paying tributes to the martyrs marking the Independence Day.

Later, they were sent to jail in a violence case.

In the morning today, he was taken to hospital when he was feeling unwell. Around noon, he was taken back to jail. After that, around 3:30 pm he again fell sick and died immediately after he was taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, the of the BNP leader’s wife Hasina Shamim alleged her husband died due to negligence in treatment. She said her husband was totally innocent and he was arrested in false and a politically motivated case.

Office secretary of Kustia district BNP, Abdur Razzak Bachhu, alleged Arju was being deprived of proper treatment since he was sent to jail. Despite having court order for ensuring his proper treatment, the jail authorities did nothing in this regard.
