A group of students of Bangladesh’s oldest public academia, Dhaka University (DU), put its academic and administrative buildings under lock and key to press home their four-point demand, including cancellation of seven colleges’ affiliation with the institution since Sunday morning.

The protesters have been bringing out processions after blocking all roads on the campus.

Since early morning, the protesting students took position at the main entrances of the academic buildings including arts and science faculties and administrative buildings.

On July 18, the students blocked the Shahbagh intersection for the second consecutive term.

About 500 students blocked the intersection around noon, causing severe traffic congestion in the area and called off the demo at 2:00pm with an announcement to boycott all classes and examinations from Sunday until their demands are met.

DU students alleged that academic and administrative activities of the university of around 37,000 students slowed down due to the affiliation with the seven colleges.

Around 175,000 students are now studying in those seven colleges including Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College.

DU Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Samad urged the students to postponed the movement until any decision from the government on this matter.

“It’s not any unique decision of the university authority, it’s a national decision. So we have to follow a system to make any change in this regard,” Samad added.

Earlier at around 9AM on Sunday he tried to enter his administrative office but failed due to protest of the students.

The agitated students vowed to continue movements until the university authorities formally take initiative to fulfill their demands.
