Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) President Nurul Haque Nur was once again assaulted allegedly by activists of ruling party’s student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in Bogura on Sunday.

At least five other members of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad (Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council- BGSRPC) were also injured in the incident.

Cameraperson of Jamuna Television Shahniaz Shaon was also assaulted as the BCL men allegedly tried to seize his camera when he was filming the incident.

Some 25-30 people launched the assault around 5:00pm when Nur and his followers were preparing for an iftar party of his organisation BGSRPC.

Nur and Central Joint Convener of the quota reformist students’ platform Rasul were badly injured, Md Din Yanim Molla, joint convener of the platform, told a national English daily. They were taken to Mohammad Ali Hospital initially.

“We informed the police about this iftar party, but they asked us not to arrange it anywhere in Bogura as they suspected BCL men might attack us,” he added.

Contacted, Sonaton Chakroborty, additional superintendent of police (Bogra Sadar Circle), said that they did not know about any such programme or threat.

Naimur Rajjak Titas, president of BCL Bogura unit, said that there was another iftar party of Bangladesh Awami Sechchasebok League on the library premises.

“Nur and his men were shouting,” he said. They only jostled with one another during an altercation and nothing more than that happened, he added.

Earlier, on March 12, BCL leaders and activists assaulted newly-elected DUCSU VP Nurul Huq and his associates at TSC on the Dhaka University campus.

Nurul Huq reached the DU campus at 1:45pm on that day from hospital where he was undergoing treatment after being assaulted by BCL activists during DUCSU election on 11 March.

Nurul, however, bagged the VP post of DUCSU defeating the BCL candidate though the result was rejected the BCL.
