Three suspected ‘criminals’ killed in ‘gunfights’

At least three suspected ‘criminals’ were killed in ‘gunfights’ in Feni and Nawabganj early Sunday, United News of Bangladesh reports.

According to report, a wanted ‘criminal’ was killed in an alleged shootout with police at Majhirkanda in Nawabganj.

The deceased was identified as Ripon, 35, hailing from Rajoir in Madaripur. At least 14 cases, including murder, were pending against him, the police said.

Nawabganj police officer-in-charge Mostafa Kamal said that acting on information that a group of criminals was preparing to commit robbery, a team of the police went to the spot around 1:00am.

The criminals, including Ripon, opened fire on the police team when they reached the spot, triggering the gunfight, the OC said.

Ripon’s body was recovered after the skirmish, he added.

According to another report, Two suspected ‘drug peddlers’ were killed in an alleged gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion at Fatehpur in Feni Sadar upazila.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

A RAB team raided an abandoned house in rail gate area around 1:30am after being tipped off that a gang of drug peddlers was there, said RAB-7 assistant director and assistant superintendent of police Mashqur Rahman.

The ‘criminals’ opened fire as soon as the RAB team reached the spot, triggering a gunfight, Rahman said.

After the skirmish, RAB members recovered the bodies of two ‘criminals’ from the spot, the officer said.

Two firearms, 17 bullets and five bullet shells were seized at the spot, he added.
