Fire guts 50 shops in Noakhali market

A number of shops were gutted after a fire broke out at the Islamia Market at Chowmuhani of Begumganj upazila in Noakhali on Sunday evening, UNB reports.

Toufik-E-Elahi, deputy assistant director of Noakhali Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the fire originated at a shop around 6:30pm and spread rapidly.

On information, 10 firefighting units from Noakhali Sadar and neighbouring Feni district went to the spot and brought the fire under control after two hours of frantic effort, he said.

The reason behind the fire and extent of damage could not be known immediately.

Five people, including a firefighter, were injured while extinguishing the blaze, Toufik said.

Witnesses said more than 50 shops were gutted in the fire. Traders claimed they incurred a loss of Tk several crore.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of the district Tonmoy Das visited the spot immediately and formed a three-member probe body with Begumganj UNO Mahbubur Rahman as its chief to look into the incident.

The committee was asked to submit its report within the next seven working days.
