Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign ends with loss to Pakistan by 94 runs

-

Bangladesh ended their World Cup campaign on a disappointing note losing their final match against Pakistan at Lord’s on Friday.

Pakistan won the toss and batted first to post 315 for nine wickets in 50 overs with the help of the maiden ton of Imam-ul-Haque in the World Cup.

Chasing the target on a pitch that appeared to be batting friendly, Bangladesh tumbled for 221 runs.

Bangladesh lost two early wickets before posting 50 runs. Soumya Sarkar failed to capitalise on his solid start and got out for 22 off 22 balls. The other opener, Tamim Iqbal, also failed to flare up as he got out after scoring only eight off 21 balls.

However, Shakib Al Hasan, the number-one all-rounder, hit his seventh 50-plus score in this World Cup. The Bangladeshi batting line-up collapsed after his departure.

One of the key takeaways from this match was Shakib’s personal achievement of amassing 606 runs in the World Cup, equalling the record of Sachin Tendulkar. Matthew Hayden is the only other cricketers to score more than 600 runs in a single edition of the World Cup.

After Shakib’s dismissal, the onus was on Mahmudullah Riyad but he posted only 29 off 41.

Eventually, Bangladesh were all-out in 44.1 overs. Shaheen Afridi took six wickets conceding 35 runs.

Earlier, Pakistan posted 315 for nine wickets riding on the maiden century of Imam-ul-Haque in the World Cup. Besides him, Babar Azam struck 96 as well.

For the Tigers, Mustafizur Rahman recorded his second five-for as the first bowler in this World Cup. Mohammad Saifuddin shone with the ball too, bagging three wickets for 77 runs.

With this match, the World Cup assault of both Bangladesh and Pakistan came to the end.
