2,326 new cases mark slight fall in dengue infections; another dies

-

A total of 2,326 people infected with dengue were hospitalised across the country in 24 hours till Thursday morning, showing a slight fall in the number of such patients than Wednesday’s 2,428.

However, a college girl died of dengue at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital on Thursday morning, UNB reports.

The deceased was identified as Khaleda Parvin, 25, a degree student of Madhukhali Govt Ainuddin College in Faridpur and daughter of Firoz Khan of Meghchami village in Madhukhali.

Chairman of Meghchami union parishad Hasan Ali said Khaleda, who was infected with dengue a week ago, was taken to Madhukhali Health Complex first and then shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

As her condition did not improve, the college girl was taken to the DMCH four days ago where she died around 8:30am, he said.

Of the new dengue cases, 1,158 were reported from the capital alone with one suffering from dengue hemorrhagic, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Since the beginning of its outbreak this year, 34,666 patients were hospitalised with dengue and 25,872 discharged after recovery, according to the DGHS data.

At least 8,765 patients, including children, are currently undergoing treatment at hospitals and of them, 5,140 are in Dhaka.

Since January, 29 dengue patients died, the DGHS said, although the unofficial estimates suggest the death toll is much higher.

Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader urged people to cooperate with the government instead of criticising it unnecessarily to tackle the dengue prevalence.

Urging all to keep their own homes and workplaces clean, he said the two city corporations of Dhaka and other organisations concerned are working in a coordinated manner to eliminate dengue.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s directives to intensify the cleanliness drive, Quader, also the AL general secretary, said, “Now the only work is to check the life-threatening dengue.”

Besides, all the ministries, departments and other organisations have been asked take steps against Aedes mosquito propagation at their offices before going on Eid-ul-Azha vacation, said a PID handout.

Another handout said Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) separately appointed officers in 129 wards each to supervise and coordinate the mosquito control activities.

The DNCC has also formed a 10-member technical committee to purchase mosquito repellent.

The two city corporations are conducting mobile court drives to identify the mosquito breeding grounds and destroy those, the handout added.

City corporations have distributed aerosol spray among educational institutions free of cost while spraying it in all the vehicles in bus stands while leaving the city.

UNB correspondents from different districts said new dengue cases were being reported every day.

A total of 227 new dengue patients were taken to hospitals in Chattogram division in the last 24 hours till 8 am on Thursday while 179 in Khulna division, 66 in Rangpur, 130 in Rajshahi, 178 in Barishal, 71 in Mymensingh and 33 in Sylhet division.
