The intern doctors at Sylhet Women’s Medical College Hospital (SWMC) on Sunday staged a demonstration protesting rape threat given to one of their fellows by a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student front of ruling Awami League.

The doctors demanded the arrest of the leader within 24 hours.

They brought out a procession from the medical college premises that ended at the same place and formed a human chain after marching to Chowhatta Point of the city in the afternoon.

Dr Badrul Hossain Rokon, president of Bangladesh Medical Association in Sylhet, expressed his solidarity with the protesting physicians and demanded the BCL leader’s immediate arrest.

Earlier on Thursday, Chhatra League leader Sarwar Hossain threatened a SWMC intern with rape and murder and a video of the incident went viral on social media. Sarwar is the former vice-president of the student front’s Sylhet district unit.

SWMC registrar Ishfaq Zaman recorded a general diary with Kotwali police station in this regard on Saturday noon.

The general diary will be taken as a case after primary investigation if involvement of the BCL leader is found, police said.
