Drowning in debt, mother of 4 ‘commits suicide’ in Munshiganj

Overburdened by debt in the face of chronic poverty, a mother of four children reportedly committed suicide in Ichapura village of Sirajdikhan upazila in Munshiganj early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Shahnaj Begum, 52, wife of Nur Mohammad of the village.

Locals said Shahnaj was in extreme financial crisis for a long time and also overburdened with debt from the large amount of loans she took from NGOs that she failed to repay.

She hanged herself at home in the small hours of Wednesday, that was spotted by her daughter later in the day.

Officer-in-Charge of Sirajdikhan Police Station Md Farid Uddin confirmed the death, but said the body remains with the family as no complaint was filed in this regard.
