A scintillating Shakib Al Hasan handed Afghanistan their seventh consecutive defeat in the ongoing World Cup as Bangladesh won the match by 62 runs at Southampton on Monday.

The southpaw hit a fifty while batting and then took five wickets for just 29 runs while bowling to register Bangladesh’s third win in this World Cup.

With this win, Bangladesh remain in the race for the semifinals of the World Cup with seven points from seven matches.

Along the way, the all-rounder became the only cricketer from Bangladesh to register a five-for in the World Cups and the second cricketer after India’s Yuvraj Singh to score a fifty and record a five-for in the same match of the World Cup.

Later, Shakib was adjudged man of the match for the all-round performance.

Gulbadin Naib (47) and Samiullah Shinwari (49*) were the only Afghan batsmen to show some batting prowess. However, their efforts went in vain as Afghanistan ended on 200 losing all the wickets in 47 overs.

Afghanistan started the chase adding 49 runs in the first wicket stand. Shakib removed Rahmat Shah to give the Tigers a breakthrough. In the second wicket stand, they added another 30 runs before Mosaddek Hossain got Hashmatullah Shahidi dismissed by dint of stumping.

Afghanistan failed to capitalise on their solid start as they lost three wickets while going to 117 from 79. Shakib removed Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi in a span of three balls during the 29th over.

In 35.1 overs, Afghanistan lost five wickets in 132 runs. Shakib scalped four of them conceding just 10 runs in seven overs. Along the way, Shakib completed 30-plus wickets in the World Cups and became the first cricketer to achieve 1000-plus runs and 30-plus wickets in the World Cups as well.

However, in the seventh wicket stand, Samiullah and Najibullah Zadran added 56 runs, which was Bangladesh’s last scare before sealing the victory.

Eventually, Afghanistan tumbled for 200 all-out in 47 overs, and the Tigers sealed the game by 62 runs.

Earlier, Bangladesh posted 262 for seven in 50 overs after sent to bat first.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim struck 83 off 87 with four fours and one six, which was Bangladesh’s highest individual score in the match. Along with him, Shakib hit a fifty (51).

Bangladesh’s 262 is the highest team total at The Rose Bowl, Southampton, in this World Cup. Along the way, Bangladesh surpassed India’s 230 that they scored against South Africa on June 5.

Earlier, Afghanistan captain won the toss and sent Bangladesh to bat first. In this match, the team management of the Tigers sent Liton Das to open the innings with Tamim Iqbal. The right-handed batsman hit two fours but failed to maintain the start.

Earlier, Afghanistan captain won the toss and sent Bangladesh to bat first. In this match, the team management of the Tigers sent Liton Das to open the innings with Tamim Iqbal. The right-handed batsman hit two fours but failed to maintain the start.

He fell as the first batsman while playing Mujeeb Ur Rahman who ended up being to be the best bowler of Afghanistan taking three wickets conceding 39 runs in 10 overs. Along with Liton, he grabbed the wickets of Shakib and Soumya Sarkar as well.

Despite losing early wicket, Shakib and Tamim added 59 runs in the second wicket stand which helped the Tigers repair the early damage. Tamim fell for 36 off 53 balls. The southpaw misjudged the ball of Mohammad Nabi which shattered his stumps.

In the third wicket stand, Shakib and Mushfiqur added 61 runs which helped them complete 3000 runs in ODIs in the partnerships comprising only both of them.

Along the way, Shakib surpassed David Warner’s 447 to become the most run scorer in this World Cup so far. After today’s innings, Shakib has now 476 runs with two hundred and three fifties.

Bangladesh included Mohammad Saifuddin and Mosaddek Hossain, who missed the previous game due to injuries, in place of Rubel Hossain and Sabbir Rahman.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, also made two changes to their playing XI adding Dawlat Zadran and Samiullah Shenwari to replace Hazratullah Zazai and Aftab Alam.

Bangladesh will take on India in their next game on July 2 while Afghanistan will face Pakistan on June 29.
