Coronavirus: All AFC Cup matches postponed till end of April

As the Coronavirus scare sweeps through the continent, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed all scheduled fixtures of the AFC Cup, the continent’s flagship club competition, till the end of April.

The decision by the highest body of Asian football was taken Wednesday and notified through their official website.

Bangladesh Premier League Football champions Bashundhara Kings is due to play their two AFC Cup away matches in next April. First match against Maziya SRC on April 14 in Male and other against hosts Chennai City FC on India on April 29.

Bashundhara Kings president Imrul Hasan said, “It is an expected decision, all participating teams are now in the same situation. However, we want to keep our winning run when the tournament will restart. ”

The AFC is closely monitoring world health issues and they will take further decision later after reviewing world health situation.

Earlier on March 8, the AFC suggested their member associations to postpone World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers matches in March and June due corona virus threat. Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) also postponed all the match in home and aboard.

Earlier, Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Football holders Bashundhara Kings hosted against the TC Sports of the Maldives team TC Sports on March 11 in Dhaka.

Bashundhara Kings won the match by huge margin of 5-1 goals, Argentine forwar Hernan Barcos scored 4 goals for the Kings among 5 goals.

After the match, Bashundhara Kings clinched the top slot in the four-team Group E E securing full three points from first match while Chennai City FC of India and Maziya SRC of the Maldives bagged one point each from one matches. TC Sports were in the bottom with empty hand.

However, Group E champions will play into the next round. In the last year Dhaka Abahani played in the Zonal Semi Final playoff stage.

Meanwhile, the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games scheduled to be held March 17-21 in Konya, Turkey have been postponed and rescheduled for Aug 20-29, 2021, with the host city unchanged.
