Rita Rahman-led PPB to merge with BNP

-

People’s Party of Bangladesh (PPB), the chief of which Rita Rahman has been nominated to contest the Rangpur-3 by-polls as a candidate of ‘Sheaf of Paddy’, has decided to merge with BNP by abolishing it.

Talking to journalists on Sunday, Rita said their party decided to merge with BNP as the ideals and principles of the two parties are identical.

“There’s very little scope to play any role in national politics from a minor party. So, we’ve decided to abolish our party and remain with BNP,” she said.

In a media release, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi welcomed the PPB decision.

He hoped that the leaders and activist of PPB, led by Rita Rahman, will strengthen BNP further by joining the party.

Rita, daughter of late BNP minister Moshiur Rahman Jadu Mia, launched the party last year. The party joined the BNP-led 20-party alliance before the December-30 national election.

Earlier in the day, BNP picked Rita Rahman as candidate of Sheaf of Paddy to contest the Rangpur-3 by-election.

Party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the announcement at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Sunday.

Rita had also contested the December-30 parliamentary polls from the same seat as a Jatiya Oikyafront candidate and got defeated to late Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad.

The by-election to the Rangpur-3 seat, which fell vacant following the death of Ershad, will be held on October 5.
