Woman dies of dengue; 508 new patients admitted to hospitals in 24 hrs

A woman died of dengue at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) while 508 new patients were hospitalised across the country in 24 hours till Friday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Parvin Begum, 36, wife of Foijul Haque of Banaripara upazila.

Dr Bakir Hossain, director of the hospital, said Parvin was admitted to SBMCH with dengue fever around 1:30pm on Friday.

“She died around 9:30pm while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit,” he added.

Currently, 80 dengue patients are being treated at the hospital. Of them, 21 were admitted in the last 24 hours till noon, said Dr Bakir.

Meanwhile, 508 new patients were hospitalised across the country, indicating a decline in the number of new cases.

Of them, 165 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and 343 in other parts of the country, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Currently, 2,158 patients, including 902 in the capital, are being treated at hospitals, it said.

Bangladesh has been grappling with a massive outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease. The outbreak put severe strain on the country’s medical system.

Since the beginning of this year, 83,989 people were hospitalised with dengue, most of them in Dhaka. Of them, 81,628 made full recovery.

Since January, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received information about 203 dengue-related deaths. It has so far reviewed 116 cases and confirmed 68 dengue deaths.
