Cancel documents signed with India, BNP to govt

-

Accusing the government of violating the constitution by signing ‘anti-state’ bilateral documents with India, BNP on Sunday demanded the annulment of the deals Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina signed on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also demanded that the Prime Minister step down for breaching her constitutional oath by signing ‘unilateral’ documents with India to protect her own interests sacrificing the national ones, UNB reports.

“We strongly denounce and protest the anti-state deals, including the withdrawal of water from the Feni River by India. We demand immediate cancellation of those documents,” he said.

The BNP leader further said. “We want to say the signing of bilateral documents allowing India to use Chattogram and Mongla ports, withdraw water from the Feni River and import bulk LPG from Bangladesh for its north-eastern states is clearly violation of the Constitution. It’s also tantamount to treason.”

Rizvi said Sheikh Hasina has lost all the constitutional rights to remain in the post of Prime Minister by signing the documents with India as she only protected the interests of the neighbouring country.

On Saturday, Bangladesh and India signed seven bilateral documents after a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

Rizvi claimed there has been a serious resentment in public mind following the signing of the ‘anti-state’ documents with India by the Prime Minister.

“It seems Sheikh Hasina has given another undertaking through signing the deals. The government has apparently handed over the ports and gas of a sovereign country and the water of the Feni River to the other (country). Not only that but also permission was given to install radars in coastal areas without thinking about our own security issue,” he said.

In return, the BNP leader said, Sheikh Hasina got the ‘guarantee’ to stay in power and Tagore Peace Award while the country’s people achieved nothing.

He said their party does not want enmity with anyone as it is willing to maintain friendly relations with all based on mutual respect and equality.

“Friendship is made based on transactions on the basis of equality. Only giving unilaterally without getting anything is not friendship. It’s called one-sided love. How will those who lack patriotism and courage to protect national interests and realise justified rights run the country?” he observed.

About the arrest of Jubo League’s Dhaka South unit President Ismail Hossain Samrat for his alleged involvement in casino business, the BNP leader said it is a drama to divert people’s attention to a different direction from the deals signed with India.

“They now arrested Samrat so that people don’t talk about the unequal deals signed with India. Awami League considers the country’s people as fools, but the party has no sense to understand people’s perception about it,” he added.

The BNP leader said the Election Commission on Saturday staged a farce in the name of by-polls to Rangpur-3 constituency. “We turn down the results of the by-election.”
