-

A fire broke out at two markets in the city’s Khilgaon area early Thursday that gutted at least 25 shops.

Deputy assistant director Kazi Najimozzaman of Fire Service and Civil Defense said Khilgaon City Corporation Market first caught fire around 3:15 am, which quickly spread to the adjoining Pubali Shopping Market in the area.

On information, 15 firefighting units went to the spot and extinguished the blaze around 5:35 am.

The origin of the fire could not be known immediately.

There are three markets---Khilgaon City Corporation, Pubali Shopping Centre and Uttara Market---in the area housed a total of 1335 shops, said Najimozzaman.

The fire came under control at 5 am and fully doused around 5:35 am, he said.

The fire could not spread so much because of hectic efforts of the firefighting units, he added.
