A ruling Awami League party law maker has filed a Tk10 crore defamation case against a senior journalist and editor of country’s leading Bangla national daily over media reports from 2018.

Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, the MP from Barguna-1, has filed the case against publisher and Editor of Daily Prothom Alo, Matiur Rahman with the Joint District Judges Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Judge Masum Billah accepted the case at 2pm, Shambhu's lawyer Jagdish Chandra Sheel said.

According to the case statement, Prothom Alo had published a report on September 27, 2018, titled "Taka chhara noren na Shambhu" (Shambhu does not move without money), with a caricature of Shambhu.

The lawmaker claimed the story was false, fabricated and baseless, for which he suffered defamation. He sought Tk10 crore as compensation.

''I have filed the case to prevent yellow journalism," Shambhu said.
